How to Read Syloti Nagri in 10 Minutes
Sylhet has its own alphabet. Not Bengali — its own. It is called ꠍꠤꠟꠐꠤ ꠘꠣꠉꠞꠤ, Syloti Nagri, and for centuries it filled handwritten puthi manuscripts across the region. Today most Sylhetis have never seen it.
Here is the surprising part: it is easier than Bengali. Bengali has around fifty letters. Syloti Nagri has thirty-three. There are almost no conjuncts to memorise, and the whole aspirated/unaspirated distinction — ক versus খ, প versus ফ — simply does not exist. If you already read Bengali, you can sound out your first Nagri word before you finish this article.
A very short history
Nagri belongs to a family of simplified scripts that ordinary people — traders, ballad singers, village teachers — developed for their own use, while the more elaborate scripts stayed with priests and administrators. In Sylhet it was used above all to write and preserve spiritual ballads. There is little evidence it was ever used for administration or general correspondence, which is part of why it stayed out of the record books.
It survived in printed form well into the twentieth century, then faded fast. Formal education ran in Bengali, printing consolidated around Bengali, and within a couple of generations the script slipped out of everyday life.
The turning point came in 2005, when Syloti Nagri was added to Unicode at
U+A800–U+A82F. That single technical decision is why the letters in this
article render on your screen at all — and why a converter is possible.
Step 1 — the one idea you need
Syloti Nagri is an abugida, exactly like Bengali and Devanagari. That means every consonant already carries a built-in vowel — the sound ɔ, roughly the “o” in “bought”.
- ꠇ on its own is not k. It is ko.
- To change that vowel you hang a vowel sign on it.
- To remove it entirely you add hasanta ꠆.
That is the whole system. Everything else is just learning shapes.
Step 2 — the 33 letters
They are ordered the same way as every South Asian alphabet: sounds made at the back of the mouth first, moving forward to the lips. If you know the Bengali order, you already know this one.

| ꠡ | শ / ষ / স | sh | ʃ / ʂ | U+A821 |
| ꠢ | হ/ স | h | h / ɦ | U+A822 |
Notice what is missing: there is no separate letter for ঙ — the sign ꠋ covers both ং and ঙ. One letter ꠘ does the work of ন, ণ and ঞ. One letter ꠡ replaces শ, ষ and স. Fewer letters, fewer spelling traps.
Step 3 — the vowel signs
Five signs, and they behave exactly like Bengali kar. Using ꠇ (ko) as the base:
There is one extra sign worth knowing, dvisvara ꠂ, which adds an i glide to make a diphthong: ꠇꠂ is কৈ, koi.
Step 4 — three sound rules that trip everyone up
This is where learners stumble, so read it twice. Sylheti pronunciation departs from standard Bengali in three regular ways.
1. ক is usually not a “k”
Sylheti ক is normally [x] — a scraped sound, like the ch in Scottish “loch”. It only stays a hard [k] next to i or u.
- ꠇꠟꠝ কলম — xolom
[xɔlɔm]· pen - ꠈꠤꠠꠇꠤ খিড়কি — kiRki
[kiʍki]· window
2. প becomes ফ, শ/স often becomes হ
- পানি → fani · water
- মেয়ে is ফুরি, furi — not পুরি, which is a snack
- শিখেছি → হিখছি, hikchi · I have learned
- সাত → হাত, hat · seven
3. Aspiration disappears
ভাত is written with ভ but pronounced
[bat]. ঘ sounds like গ,
ঝ like জ. This is exactly why Nagri needs fewer
letters than Bengali — the distinction it would encode is not there in the speech.

Cover the right-hand side of each card and sound the Nagri out. The pronunciations below come from SOAS Sylheti Project materials, not from guesswork.

[xɔla]banana
[zal]net
[ɡɔʍi]clock
[bɛŋ]frog
[sabɔn]soap
[xɔɾɡʊʃ]rabbit
Step 6 — a whole sentence
From a Sylheti storybook published by the SOAS Sylheti Project:
ꠄꠇ ꠉꠤꠞꠡ꠆ꠔꠞ ꠄꠇꠐꠣ ꠙꠥꠀ ꠀꠍꠤꠟ꠨
এক গিরস্তর একটা ফুয়া আছিল।
ek girostor ekTa fua asil — “A farmer had a son.”
Work through it slowly. ꠄꠇ = ek, one. ꠄꠇꠐꠣ = ekTa, one (thing) — the classifier টা you already know from Bengali. ꠀꠍꠤꠟ = asil, was. The final mark ꠨ is Nagri's full stop, the equivalent of ।.
That is it. You have read Syloti Nagri.

Questions people ask
Is Syloti Nagri hard to learn?
No. It has 33 letters against Bengali's 50, no aspirated/unaspirated pairs to memorise and very few conjuncts. Most people who already read Bengali can sound out simple Nagri words within an hour.
Is Sylheti a language or a dialect?
Scholars disagree. Sylheti sits in the Eastern Indo-Aryan group with Bengali and Assamese and shares much vocabulary with Bengali, but differs sharply in pronunciation and verb morphology, and it has its own script. Many speakers regard it as a language in its own right.
Can I type Syloti Nagri on a normal keyboard?
Yes. Syloti Nagri has been in Unicode since 2005 (U+A800–U+A82F). You can type Bangla, English or Banglish into a converter and get Nagri out, or use an on-screen Nagri keyboard.
Why do I see empty boxes instead of letters?
Your device has no Syloti Nagri font. Installing Noto Sans Syloti Nagri, which is free, fixes it everywhere on your device.
